This Privacy Policy explains the following items:

  • How Sony Global Education, Inc., ("SGED", "we", "our" or "us") may read, collect, use and/or store your information when you apply to, participate in and/or use our online math competition named “Global Math Challenge” and the related services (collectively, “Service”); and
  • Choices you may have in relation to your information collected through the Service.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully before using the Service.. This Privacy Policy only covers information collected through the Service. Another privacy policy may apply to your other interactions with SGED, any SGED affiliate or subsidiary, or any of their other products, software or services. In addition, please read our Terms and Conditions which govern your use of the Service.


We collect information from you directly, automatically when you visit the Service, and, in some instances, from third parties. Some of this information may be considered “personal information” under various applicable laws. We consider information that identifies you as a specific, identified individual (such as your name and e-mail address) to be personal information. We will also treat additional information, including IP addresses and cookie identifiers, as “personal information” where required by applicable law. We may take your personal information and de-identify it so as to make it non-personally identifiable, either by combining it with information about other individuals and/or by hashing the information or otherwise removing characteristics that make the information personally identifiable directly to you. We will treat de-identified information as non-personal to the fullest extent allowed by applicable law. Some of the information we collect, and the instances in which we collect that

(a)Account Information
SGED will ask you to register and collect certain information about you when you create a user account on the Service (“Account”) such as:

  • Email address
  • Time zone
  • State
  • Language setting

(b)3rd Party Service Account Information
If you choose to create an Account using your account on another network service that we designate (“3rd Party Service Account”), we may receive your 3rd Party Service Account information that you registered to your 3rd Party Service Account, such as your name, email address, profile picture, and ZIP code. Your use of any third party’s service is subject to any applicable terms, policies, or guidelines promulgated by that party. SGED is not responsible for the privacy practices of any third party.

(c)Challenger Information
When you register a “Challenger(s)” under your Account, SGED will collect certain Challenger information from you such as:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Nick name (i.e., username)
  • Time zone
  • State
  • Gender
  • School name

If you register a Challenger(s) through your 3rd Party Service Account, we may receive the Challenger’s information to be registered from your 3rd Party Service Account.

(d)Usage Information
When you use the Service, SGED may automatically receive the information regarding how you and/or Challenger(s) created through your Account use the Service, including IP address, answers on the online tests, and information about the device you use to access the Services. For information on some of the technologies we use to collect Usage Information, please see Section 8 below.

(e)Payment Information
When you pay for the Service, SGED may receive your payment information, including the payment ID issued from the payment service provider you use.


SGED may collect and/or analyze the information referred to Section 1 in order to:

  • Provide you with the features, functions and customer support of the Service, including tailoring your experience on the Service;
  • Enforce the terms of service and any rules or codes of conduct applying to the Service;
  • Provide and improve our products and services and to develop new ones;
  • Identify potential security threats and to protect SGED, its users and its affiliates;
  • Run and provide you information about promotions relating to the Service; and
  • For other purposes disclosed to you at the time you provide the personal information or otherwise with your consent.

We may send communications relating to the Service to an Account holder’s e-mail address, such as test reminders or our service/product information. You may be able adjust your communication preferences in the Settings menu of your Account or by following the instructions in any marketing email we send you.


Except as may be prohibited by law, we may share non-personal information, such as aggregate user statistics, hashed or otherwise de-identified information, demographic information, and Usage Information, with third parties. We may also share your information, including your personal information, as disclosed at the time you provide your information, as set forth in this Privacy Policy, and with the following:

  • Third party contractors to process or analyze your information on SGED's behalf for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy; and
  • The purchasing or acquiring entity in the event that we sell or transfer a portion or all of our business (including as part of a due-diligence process).

We may also retain, use and/or disclose any of your information as required or permitted by law, regulation or order, including to the police or other appropriate authorities, to investigate complaints made by or against you, or to protect or defend ourselves, or others, against illegal, criminal or harmful activities.


We will retain the information described in Section 2 for as long as you use the Service and for a reasonable time thereafter In addition, we may need to keep your information for an additional period of time to comply with applicable legal, regulatory, or other compliance obligations. Once your information is removed from active databases, the information may remain on backup or storage media to the extent allowed by applicable law.
You may review and request that SGED delete any personal information that the Service has collected and retained about you or Challengers you have registered. If you would like to request access to or the deletion of any personal information we may have about you or your Challengers, please send an email to with the specific nature of your request, referencing “Global Math: Personal Information Request” in the subject line; (b) call us toll-free at 1-833-681-9900; or (c) complete this form. When submitting your request, you must include your first and last name, email address, and zip code or mailing address. You may be asked to provide additional proof of identification so that we can verify your identity and validate the request. We may limit the number of requests to which we will respond each year as permitted by applicable law.


The Service is available to users in the United States. Your information will be processed, stored and transferred for the purposes outlined in Sections 2 and 3 to outside your country of residence, including in particular Japan. Your information will be processed by staff operating outside your country of residence who work for us or for one of our service providers and may be seen by such staff in those countries. By using the Services, or providing us with any information, you fully understand and unambiguously consent to this transfer, processing and storage of your information in Japan and other jurisdictions in which the privacy laws may not be as comprehensive as those in the country where you reside and/or are a citizen.


SGED undertakes reasonable security measures designed to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of your personal information. Although we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee or warrant the security of any information transmitted to us through the Service or that we store on our systems or that is stored on our third party contractors' systems.


Only a person who is age thirteen (13) or older may register for an Account on the Service. A child under the age of thirteen (13) (“Child” or “Children”) may not register for the Service and may not have her/his own Account. To use the Service, a Child needs to be registered as a Challenger by her/his parent or legal guardian (“Parent”) or an authorized school teacher as further described in the Terms and Conditions of the Service.

If a Child attempts to register to the Service, we will first request the email address of her/his Parent and then we will provide the Parent with a notice asking the Parent to create an Account. Unless the Parent completes the Account registration process, the Parent’s email address we collect for this process will not be used other than for providing the notice to the Parent.

If you are a Parent and are concerned that your Child has provided us with personally identifiable information without your consent, you should contact us as indicated below.

The Parent or authorized school teacher who registered Children under her/his Account may review such Child(ren)’s activities anytime by signing in to the Account and may also delete the registered Child(ren) from the Account.


The technologies used on our Services to collect Usage Information, including device identifiers, may include:
Cookies: "Cookies" (which may be html files, Flash files or other technology) are small text files that help store user preferences and activity. A cookie is placed on a device when it is used to visit our Service. Cookies may be used for many purposes, such as remembering you and your preferences, tracking your visits to our web pages and customizing your website experience. You may refuse to accept cookies by altering the settings on your internet browser. If you choose to disable cookies on your device, some features of our Service may not function properly.

Web Beacons: "Web beacons" (also known as image tags, pixel tags, GIFS or web bugs) are small pieces of code used to collect advertising data, such as counting page views, promotion views or advertising responses. Web beacons or similar technologies may be used for a number of purposes, including, without limitation, to count visitors to our websites, to monitor how users navigate our websites, to count how many sent e-mails were actually opened or to determine whether content sent was actually viewed.


In some countries, you have certain rights with respect to the personal information SGED holds about you. These may include the right to request a copy of the personal information that we hold about you and/or you may request that we correct, amend, delete or block such personal information if it is inaccurate. If you would like to exercise any of these rights, please contact us as set forth in Section 4.


California Privacy Notice

If you reside in California, we are required to provide additional information to you about how we collect, use and disclose your information, and you may have additional rights with regard to how we use your information. We have included this California-specific information below.

10.1 CA Personal Information.

Consistent with this Privacy Policy, we may collect the following categories of information about California residents ("CA Personal Information") from you and/or your device for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, specifically:
  • Personal Identifiers: such as name, email address and mailing address;
  • Commercial Information: such as purchase history and payment information;
  • Other Identifiers: such as IP address and device identifiers;
  • Internet or Other Electronic Network Activity: such as operating system, page views, browsing history and other network activities; and
  • Other Consumer Characteristics: such as demographic information, including age or gender.

In some cases (such as where you elect to use a 3rd Party Service Account to create an Account on our Service or where you are registered as a Challenger by an Account holder), we may collect CA Personal Information from a third party. We use this CA Personal Information for the purposes described in the “HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION” section above.

10.2 CA Personal Information Sold or Disclosed for Business Purposes.

  • Sharing your CA Personal Information for Business Purposes: In the preceding twelve months, we may have shared the following categories of CA Personal Information for business purposes: Personal Identifiers, Commercial Information, Other Identifiers, Internet or Other Electronic Network Activity, and Other Consumer Characteristics. This information may be shared for the purpose of providing services to you, delivering communications, for legal compliance, or to manage or protect legitimate interests, in compliance with law.
  • Sale of CA Personal Information: We do not sell your CA Personal Information as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).

10.3 California Consumer Rights.

Subject to certain exceptions, as a California resident, you may have the following rights with respect to your CA Personal Information: (i) Access. Request access to your CA Personal Information that we have collected, used, or disclosed within the preceding 12 months; (ii) Deletion. Request deletion of your CA Personal Information; and (iii) CA Personal Information Disclosed for Business Purposes. Request information about the CA Personal Information we have disclosed for business purposes within the preceding 12 months. To the extent permitted by applicable law, we may be required to retain some of your CA Personal Information and certain CA Personal Information is strictly necessary in order for us to fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

10.4 Exercising Your Rights

If you are a California resident and wish to exercise any of these rights, please follow the instructions set out in the “DATA RETENTION; MANAGING YOUR INFORMATION” section above.
We will not discriminate against you by offering you different pricing or products, or by providing you with a different level or quality of products, or in connections with any promotions or other offerings, based solely upon you exercising your rights to your CA Personal Information.
Authorized Agents: To the extent that you elect to designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, they must provide appropriate documentation including written signed permission from you, proof of your identity, and verification of their identity; or a valid, designated power of attorney as defined under the California Probate Code. We may require additional proof of authority or may need to contact you directly to validate the request.

Additional Notice to California Residents:

If you are a California resident, under the California “Shine the Light” law, you have the right to receive: a) information identifying any third party company(ies) to whom SGED may have disclosed, within the past year, personal information pertaining to you and your family for that company's direct marketing purposes; and b) a description of the categories of personal information disclosed. We do not share personal information (as defined under California’s Shine the Light law) with third parties for those parties own direct marketing purposes.


To the extent permitted by applicable law, this Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. We will notify you of any changes to our Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy within the Service and we may also provide notice in other ways in our discretion, such as sending an email to Account holders. You are advised to consult the posted Privacy Policy regularly for any changes. Your continued use of the Services after the effective date of the revised Privacy Policy (or such other act as specified in the revised Privacy Policy) will constitute your consent. We will obtain consent to changes where required by law (which consent may be procured from a teacher/school on behalf of a Parent where applicable and where permitted by law).
